What is Diabetes? Diabetes and Alternative Medicine

According to statistics from the Holisticonline Web site, diabetes strikes 14 million people in the United States and more than 100 million people world wide. The American Diabetes Association estimates that six percent of the U.S. population, over the age of 40, have been diagnosed with the condition, and an equal amount has not been diagnosed yet.

Diabetes is a serious condition that can result in serious health problems or death if left unchecked. Disturbingly, many of the people who have diabetes, are not aware that they have the disease.

The good news is that diabetes alternative medicine programs as well as allopathic treatments can manage the disease quite well. Those afflicted with diabetes can live long, healthy and vibrant lives. Those who do not know they have diabetes are at the biggest risk. They can let the disease go until it is too late and irreversible damage to vital organs or blindness has occurred.

diabetes alternative medicineand two types of diabetes

There are three types of diabetes, type 1, type 2 and gestational.

Type 1 is an autoimmune disease and the more severe of the two. "Type I diabetes is due to a deficiency or failure of the pancreas to secrete insulin. It occurs when the pancreas fails to produce adequate insulin, the hormone used by the body to make blood sugar (glucose) available to cells.

"People with type 1 diabetes generally depend on injections of insulin to regulate their sugar metabolism. In the past, type 1 diabetes was called juvenile diabetes because doctors thought that it would strike only children or young adults. Doctors now know that people of any age can develop type 1 diabetes, although the majority of cases are discovered in people under 20 years of age." While people with type 1 diabetes may use diabetes alternative medicine to assuage their symptoms, they are more likely to rely on conventional diabetic treatment such as the use of insulin to regulate blood sugar. "Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes. It is also known as adult-onset diabetes, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or maturity-onset diabetes. It accounts for some 85 to 90 percent of all cases of diabetes. Four out of five of these people are overweight and in most cases, these people were overweight before their diabetes developed. Type 2 diabetes runs in families. Your risk of having type 2 diabetes goes markedly high if you have excess weight, leads a sedentary lifestyle and have a family history of Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is more common in people over the age of 40." This type of diabetes responds the best to diabetes alternative medicine.

"Gestational diabetes develops or is discovered during pregnancy. This type usually disappears when the pregnancy is over, but women who have had gestational diabetes have a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in their lives." The type of diabetes alternative medicine treatment recommended for each patients depends on the type of diabetes they have, their lifestyle and the state of their disease. Diabetes alternative medicine is extremely effective in lessoning the symptoms of diabetes caught at an early stage of development. Because of its preventative and body balancing foundations, alternative medicine can especially do wonders for type 2 diabetes in helping the body naturally balance its own blood sugar.

Types of diabetes alternative medicine treatments

Though scientifically unproven by the Western medical establishment, the following diabetes alternative medicine remedies have been anecdotally shown to help manage diabetes symptoms and balance the body and blood sugar. The following diabetes alternative medicine remedies have been excerpted from the following Web site: health.allrefer.com/alternative-medicine/diabetes-alt-1.html.

diabetes alternative medicine and acupuncture

Acupuncture is a procedure in that a practitioner inserts needles into designated points on the skin. Some Western scientists believe that acupuncture triggers the release of the body's natural painkillers. Acupuncture has been shown to offer relief from chronic pain. Acupuncture is sometimes used by people with neuropathy, the painful nerve damage of diabetes.

diabetes alternative medicine and biofeedback

"Biofeedback is a technique that helps a person become more aware of and learn to deal with the body's response to pain. This alternative therapy emphasizes relaxation and stress-reduction techniques. Guided imagery is a relaxation technique that some professionals who use biofeedback do. With guided imagery, a person thinks of peaceful mental images, such as ocean waves. A person may also include the images of controlling or curing a chronic disease, such as diabetes. People using this technique believe their condition can be eased with these positive images."

diabetes alternative medicine and chromium

"The benefit of added chromium for diabetes has been studied and debated for several years. Several studies report that chromium supplementation may improve diabetes control. Chromium is needed to make glucose tolerance factor, which helps insulin improve its action. Because of insufficient information on the use of chromium to treat diabetes, no recommendations for supplementation yet exist."

diabetes alternative medicine and magnesium

"Although the relationship between magnesium and diabetes has been studied for decades, it is not yet fully understood. Studies suggest that a deficiency in magnesium may worsen the blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes. Scientists believe that a deficiency of magnesium interrupts insulin secretion in the pancreas and increases insulin resistance in the body's tissues. Evidence suggests that a deficiency of magnesium may contribute to certain diabetes complications."

diabetes alternative medicine and vanadium

"Vanadium is a compound found in tiny amounts in plants and animals. Early studies showed that vanadium normalized blood glucose levels in animals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. A recent study found that when people with diabetes were given vanadium, they developed a modest increase in insulin sensitivity and were able to decrease their insulin requirements. Currently researchers want to understand how vanadium works in the body, discover potential side effects, and establish safe dosages."
